This is a useful test if you have a family history of the condition or if you have recently noticed symptoms such as increased thirst, passing urine frequently, weight loss/gain, tiredness and recurrent infections.
This test is done as a fasting sample of blood from your arm; if results indicate that this is above the accepted range of normal we may request you to do a definitive test in the form of a glucose tolerance test. If clinical suspicion of diabetes is high during your consultation your doctor will arrange a glucose tolerance test which is the best way to confirm whether or not you are diabetic.
Diabetes is a condition where the body is unable to handle excess sugar, which then circulates in the blood stream causing devastating end affects on certain organs, Some of the complications of diabetes are irreversible and include, vision loss, poor circulation leading to foot ulcers, infection and gangrene, kidney failure and increased risk of heart disease and cerebrovascular disease. If detected and treated many of these complications can be avoided with medical treatment.
