Hyperhidrosis is a condition where sufferers experience excessive sweating in armpits, hands, feet etc. Botox has been licensed for use for the treatment of axillary hyperhidrosis (armpit sweating) where medical management has not been effective.
The sympathetic nervous system is responsible for sweating.
Botox typically works by blocking the nerve endings of the sympathetic nervous system which therefore controls excessive sweating.
In trials involving patients with axillary hyperhidrosis injected with Botox, 81% of ptients reported more than a 50% reduction in sweating. And 50% of the patients reported a reduction of excessive underarm sweating for nearly seven months. Athough results vary on individuals, average duration of treatment lasts approx 6 months to a year.
