Preventing High Blood Pressure

Having blood pressure that is high does mean that you have a greater risk of heart attacks or strokes. There are many things that you can do to both prevent and reduce your high blood pressure. Making certain lifestyle changes can help to prevent/reduce high blood pressure:

  • Eat a healthy diet
  • Exercise regularly
  • Reduce your salt intake
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Cut down on caffeine-containing drinks
  • Keep your alcohol intake within the recommended limits
  • Stop smoking if you currently smoke

If you currently do have high blood pressure then it will need close monitoring until it is under control (within the normal range). Outside of making healthier lifestyle changes, your IPSA physician may prescribe high blood pressure medication in order to reduce your blood pressure.
