In the UK, the most common cancer in men is prostate cancer, with over 40,000 men being diagnosed with this type of cancer each year.
The body normally controls the growth of cells carefully, with dying cells being replaced in an orderly manner. When cells start to grow in an uncontrolled manner, cancer can develop. If this form of uncontrolled cell growth occurs in the prostate gland, then prostate cancer may develop.
At your confidential IPSA consultation, your IPSA physician will carry out a full prostate examination. IPSA clinics are always clean, with your privacy of paramount concern at all times. Here, your IPSA doctor, who is experienced in treating and diagnosing issues relating to the prostate gland, will work with you to assess your family history, your symptoms, and your prostate cancer risk factors.
Your IPSA practitioner will run a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test, and will interpret the results for you on a one-to-one basis so that you fully understand the findings. If your IPSA physician has any suspicion that prostate cancer is present, they will immediately refer you (locally; at a time to suit you) for a prostate biopsy.
The majority of men have no symptoms with prostate cancer in the early stages, so it is important to have any problems with urinary flow checked by your IPSA doctor.
Some men may experience pain in the pelvis, back or hips that was not previously present, and this can be a sign that the prostate cancer has spread to your bones.
The types of tests that your IPSA physician may recommend include:
Waiting for an appointment is never ideal, and this is why IPSA has same-day prostate appointments; appointments that work with your schedule. Any IPSA prostate referrals are also immediate.
