Menopause

What is the menopause?

The menopause is when a woman’s periods end (when menstruation stops). Hormonal changes lead to both physical symptoms (e.g. hot flushes) and emotional symptoms (e.g. mood swings) in many menopausal women, affecting women’s health.

Some women reach the menopause in their 30s or 40s, and if they are under the age of 45, this is called a premature menopause. The average age in the UK for a woman to experience the menopause is 52.

At IPSA clinic you will be seen by our female doctor.

You will be seen immediately and your symptoms will always be taken seriously.

A range of hormonal as well as non-hormonal and natural methods will be discussed with you at the time of the consult.

Bloods tests can be recommended and done immediately to take a snapshot of your hormone profile.

What causes the menopause?

Changes in the levels of sex hormones cause the menopause. The physical and emotional symptoms of the menopause are linked to a fall in the level of the oestrogen hormone. Symptoms can include:
• mood swings
• night sweats
• hot flushes
• irritability
• irregular periods
• vaginal dryness

Menopause treatments

If your menopause symptoms are causing you concern, then IPSA offers a hormonal treatment called hormone replacement therapy (HRT), which replaces oestrogen, relieves menopausal symptoms and is available as a:
• tablet
• cream
• gel
• skin patch, or
• implant

ISPA also offers menopause blood tests to support the diagnosis, natural treatments for the menopause and non-hormonal treatments for menopause symptoms.

The doctor will discuss all available methods of treatment for you and will choose the most effective treatment according to your symptoms.
