Scar Reduction Injections

About Scar Reduction Injections

If you have scars that are painful, itchy, unsightly or restrict your movement, you can book an appointment with our resident doctor who has a special interest in skin care.

At the IPSA clinic we can offer you an immediate consultation at a time to suit you, in a clean, quiet environment. You will have a full consultation and we will take a picture of your scarring.

Scars can often be made less visible, although they cannot be removed completely. During your appointment, our doctor will run through the different options available and the best treatment option for your scar.

The treatments our doctors suggest may include silicone creams, silicone gel sheets and steroid injections, as well as depigmenting creams for pigmented scars.

Corticosteroid Injections

Corticosteroid injections are used to treat raised scars like keloid and hypertrophic scars. These injections can vastly improve the appearance of scars.

Our doctors will make multiple small injections into your scar to reduce inflammation and flatten it. Depending on the type of scar, you may need repeat injections.

The injections are usually given on three occasions at 4 to 6-week intervals so that we can assess your body’s response. If the scar is improving, we may continue with the treatment for several months.

Silicone Gel or Sheets

Another treatment option is to apply silicone gels or sheets on the skin as it heals to reduce redness and try to minimise unsightly hypertrophic or keloid scars.

These should be placed over the scar for 12 hours a day, for at least three months in order to be effective.

Our doctor may review you over a period of time for scar injections until you are both satisfied with the results. At the end of the treatment you will be able to view the before and after picture of your recovery.
